The beginning of the Canadian / American LPS Alumni Association

News from Ada Prins ( Whippy)

Attached is a letter we sent to ex- LPS folks (about 25 in all - hope to find more ex LPS folks  here) regarding the Canadian/American LPS Alumni Association. We hope to have our organization set up soon and will let you know once we have officers in place etc.We have also put a rough draft of our organization together - and hope to have that formalized before year end.

THE LETTER

We Are Back In Action - April 2005

My apologies for being silent on this subject for quite some time. What with year end, Christmas etc - everything sort of fell by the wayside. The first quarter of 2005 has come and gone and we haven't done much to promote our association.   However, we are back on track and are serious about our commitment to raising funds for the school.

Attached is a newsletter from Viti Whippy (chairperson of the LPSFSTA) and a letter from George Katoni (LPS Principal) and Ken Horodyski who has just returned from Levuka where he spent 10 weeks doing volunteer work at the school. Ken lives in Victoria, Canada. The attachments are self explanatory - LPS needs our help NOW.

Last year we formed our Canadian/American LPS Alumni Association. It is not a formal organization per se - just something to get our fund-raising efforts for the school off to a start. Many of you  expressed interest in joining and I apologize for not getting back to you on membership issues etc. Anyone can join - you don't have to be an ex-LPS pupil. Actually the bigger the membership roll the better off the school will be! The initial goals were lofty - (funds to be raised through annual membership dues, monthly donations etc) but for now all we are asking is that you donate whatever you can whether it be monthly, quarterly, annually etc.

The officers of the Assoc. are Dorothy Kaad Gandar (Sec/Treasurer) and me as President. We have opened up a bank account for the Assoc. at Zions Bank (where I work) in Salt lake City, Utah. After 9/11 and the enactment of the Patriot Act it would have been too time consuming to try to register our Assoc as a non-profit  entity with tax exemption status (particularly so for charities where the funds will be funneled overseas). So for now your donations to the account will not be tax deductible.  I hope that this will not be a deterrent to your willingness to contribute to the betterment of LPS.

Please send your donations to:

Checks are to be made payable to LPS Alumni Association.

Thank you in advance for your donations. My next communication to you all will include a copy of our bank statement - to keep you enthused about fund-raising for good old LPS!

Also please provide input on what area you think the funds should be directed first - e.g  PC's, desks and chairs and shelving for the library? Any suggestions would be much appreciated by  me and Dorothy. I will try to contact Viti and Suli this week to get suggestions from them as well.

Moce mada and lolomas to all! And remember "Lest we forget" - this is
all for the good of LPS.

Update from Ada - July 6th2005

Hello again everyone!

Thought I'd give you an update on what's been going on the past few months. We formed the Canadian/US LPS Alumni Association in December and have six members so far - plus an Honorary member - Ken Horodyski of Victoria, Canada.

Ken has worked very, very hard to acquire computers and printers for LPS and we are just awaiting approval from Air Pacific to have them shipped from LA to Nadi. We are hoping that Air Pacific will ship the items free of charge. If not, we will have to pony up approximately $1,240.00 US for shipment. The Assoc.'s "tavi" (approx. $500.00 US) is the shipment from Vancouver to LA on Alaska Air. Hopefully Air Pacific will transport the PC's etc free of charge as that would free up the $1,240.00 for other much needed items for the school.

We are very appreciative of Ken's efforts - particularly as he was only in Fiji for 10 weeks and has taken LPS under his wing. We are also grateful to Ratu Seru and Atetha Suguturaga of Hawaii. The Fiji Club in Hawaii  had a fund-raising and Ratu Seru donated the proceeds ($555.68) to our Assoc. - and he is an ex -Marist Brothers pupil!

So once again I am on a mission - to increase our membership and hopefully donations to the LPS Assoc. So to all of you who are not members, PLEASE join the Assoc. and make a contribution. Give something back to the school that contributed much to who and what we are today!

Have a great week and hope to hear from all of you soon. When making donations, please make the check payable to the LPS Alumni Association and mail it to:
